The 2x1 Rule...Do You Know It?

Using the 2x1 Rule has helped me do more with what I’ve been learning. Putting into practice what we learn I have found has been a hard thing to do especially when there is so much information to learn that can help our business.

If don’t know this about me, today you will. I LOVE to learn! I’m an ABL person (Always Be Learning). I want to know how things work and why about anything I find interesting. My curious mind leads me to learn about things from cooking to ancient history. I like to absorb information. Especially, when it comes to design and business! I love those free conferences that have been created just for me as it seems!!!

However, over time I have realized that my love for learning can be an obstacle. I was spending so much time consuming what I learned and was doing not much with it. There is so much I want to do with my business, and I’m sure you can relate. So we take courses, webinars, etc to learn the ropes and tricks we can implement in our business.

The thing is there are so many ways to learn what we want to do, especially now because of the pandemic, virtually. I don't know about you, but I got caught up in a cycle of consuming so much information that I was never do anything besides learning. Then got overwhelmed with all the information learned and felt like it was too much to put into practice.

Something had to change for me to get out of this cycle because it was driving me to think I was not doing so great. The negative self-talk was trying to overrule my positive self-talk.

Then during one of the many webinars, I attended these past months, Chris Do said something that clicked in my mind that helped me get out of the rut I found myself in. Learning so much and not enough doing the things I learned. He introduced the 2x1 Rule.

Here is the 2x1 Rule Chris Do gave

  1. Consume

  2. Reflect

  3. Implement

  4. Share

    Then repeat the cycle

The 2x1 Rule is where you spend twice as much time on what you learn, doing. Which seems pretty obvious right? Still, so much of us have a hard time implementing what we learn. Whatever excuse we give ourselves, we need to get past them and realize they will not help us reach the goals we want for ourselves. Hypothetically doing them in our heads by the way gets us nowhere, in reality, so we must start doing.

3 of the 4 things are you doing something about what you learned. For example, if you took a lesson on creating a Pinterest pin for your offer for 30 mins. You would spend an hour or more reflecting, implementing, and sharing it on Pinterest. Doing this will also help you learn and retain the information from the lesson. Taking an extra ten lessons on creating Pinterest pins before you created one can hinder you from actually putting what you learned into practice. It will be all in theory that what you learned will work until you do it.

I use the 2x1 Rule to help me learn about something that will help me achieve my business goals. It has helped me so much in managing what I choose to learn and how I implement them as well. I do this by creating a goal I have for my business. Then, I pick how I will learn it. Next, I give myself a reasonable deadline to complete the learning and implement it. This cycle helps me stay focus and feel better about what I’m learning and doing. It breaks that cycle of always consuming and never doing. It’s up to you and me to put it into practice so we can use what we’re learning to help us progress forward in our goals.

Now you try.

Before you take another course, webinar, virtual conference, etc start by writing down what your goal is. Then write down how this active learning you’re about to take part in will help you reach your goal. Then use the 2x1 Rule and see if it helps you.

I want you to try it and please let me know how it works out! Even if it's months from now!
